Voting Against the Establishment

vote1There is a pattern developing in how people are voting as seen in the recent UK referendum and the US election. I think it is the protest vote against the establishment rather than the ideology, policy or the manifesto as people are generally disenchanted and totally fed up with their politicians, elites and looking for a change whatever that change might mean from the norm.

We were shocked when we woke up to find that UK have voted to leave the EU despite popular believe that UK would remain. Thus Brexit was born which send a massive shock wave around the world and people are taking notice and think that it is possible to vote against the establishment to break away from the norm to bring on change whether it is for better or worse.

American voting have gone the same way as the Brexit as we wake up only to find another massive shock result to evoke the same feeling we have had following UK referendum. American people have spoken and elected Donald Trump as their 45th president whether we like it or not and that is the reality. Although we cannot comprehend how this has just happened, it is the democracy pure and simple whatever we may think of the outcome and we must respect that. Both UK referendum and US election have now demonstrated how powerful can the will of the people be in protesting against the establishment. Protest! they did and did it emphatically. We cannot ignore this as to why and how this has happened.

The only way to overcome this feeling of utter shock and disbelieve is to reflect, talk to others and try to understand. Above all accept the will of the people and respect democracy no matter how difficult it is to comprehend.

Remember this feeling too shall pass…
