Emma Datshi

Emma Datshi (Chillies and Cheese) – This is one of the main dishes eaten with rice all over the Bhutan.

  • 6 chillies (green and red if you can get)
  •  onion chopped longways
  • 4 Spring onions chopped length ways
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 250g Fetta cheese or use Cheddar
  • 4 cloves of garlic, finely crushed or sliced
  • handful of coriander leaves
  • 2 tspoon vegetable oil

Cut chillies longways (1 chilli = 4 pcs). Put these chillies and chopped onions in a pot of water (about a cup). Add 2 teaspoon vegetable oil. Then boil in medium heat for about 10 minutes. Add tomato, garlic and spring onion and boil for another 2 mins. Add cheese and turn off the heat. Finally add coriander and Stir. Your Ema Datshi is ready to serve.
Serves 2 -3.
Serve with a generous portion of red rice or white rice, along with some other dish or on its own.
Note: The cheese that is actually used cannot be found outside Bhutan. They are a local farmer’s cheese with a unique texture that doesn’t dissolve when put in boiling water. I have tried mixture of various kinds of cheeses but never been able to find the one close to Bhutanes cheese. I use either mild or mature chedar chees but you can try others.

This dish is VERY HOT.
